SEO Mistakes You Should Stay Away From by Gary Messinger | on August 20, 2013 It’s true that business owners need to be an expert in many things. Apart from knowing the ins and outs of the nature of their business (e.g. restaurateurs are adept in food business, computer shop owners should be tech-savvy), they should also have skills in financial management, operations, marketing, public relations, and many others. On top of all these, they should also be familiar with internet marketing, which has become the latest powerful tool in spreading the word about one’s business. One aspect that all business owners should know about is SEO. This may take a backseat to social media marketing when it comes to increasing brand awareness, but it also plays an important role in generating positive leads and attracting more customers. SEO, which stands for search engine optimization, refers to the process of optimizing a web page with high quality content and links to rank higher in search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. After all, it’s imperative to rank among the top ten in the first page of results. Otherwise, your business is deemed invisible. To get started with SEO, it would help to know the common SEO mistakes that business owners should stay away from. Mistake # 1 – Misuse of keywords How does SEO work? Think about this: when an internet surfer would like to search for a product that you offer, what type of keywords would she put in the search engine? For example, if you sell children’s furniture, moms are most likely to put in the keywords, “furniture for kids” or “kids furniture” in the search engine. These keywords should then be included in your web content and blog articles so that the search engine can easily detect them and point readers to your site more easily. Make sure that you use an efficient tool for generating keywords like Google Adwords. If you don’t use the right keywords, you won’t rank higher in the search engines. Mistake # 2 – Low quality content Ever since the Google Penguin and Panda updates, the internet user’s experience has tremendously improved. That’s because Google now penalizes websites with low quality content. Higher priority is given to websites with excellent content. With this said, it would be a big mistake to post substandard content on your site just to get your website going. If you don’t have the time to create highly-researched and informative articles, hire someone who can. Keep in mind that now it’s all about quality and not about quantity anymore. Mistake # 3 – Black hat SEO This term refers to illegal practices in SEO like keyword stuffing, articles that are not relevant to your site, invisible text, links from bad websites, doorway pages, and so on. If someone claiming to be an expert in SEO tells you that black hat SEO techniques can get your website on top of the ranking, don’t believe that. High quality content and links are the key to getting on top of Google and other search engines. SEO may seem complicated at first. But eventually, you’ll get the hang of it, and you can use it to make your business website more visible online.
