SEPTEMBER 20 - Calvin Edwin “Cal” Ripken Jr. (“The Ironman”) is an American baseball shortstop and third baseman (Baltimore Orioles) who is best known for breaking Lou Gehrig’s record when, on this day in 1998, he voluntarily ended his 17-year streak at 2,632 consecutive games played (he had 3,184 hits, 431 HRs, 1,695 RBIs, and 2 Golden Glove Awards). He and wife Kelly have a daughter, Rachel, and a son, Ryan (a student and baseball player at the University of South Carolina).
