SEPTEMBER 2013 SCAM NEWSLETTER - Driving Licences Don’t get confused when applying for a driving licence. Middlesbrough Trading Standards are warning consumers after residents in the town complained about websites offering services to renew or apply for a driving licence. The service has received a number of queries about websites which offer a service to apply or amend your new licence. These websites charge a fee for checking the details you submit online and printing out a form which is then sent to you to sign and submit to the DVLA. Unlike some websites in the past, these sites now state reasonably clearly that they are not affiliated with the DVLA and make it clear that the service can be obtained for a smaller fee and in some cases is a free service. Searching on the internet for government services can bring up these sites and advertisements for them may feature prominently in search results. Unfortunately some customers are still misled by the sites and only realise after making payment they are not the official GOV.uk . It is important to read the information on the site before giving payment details. Don’t always rely on the sites which appear first when you input the search criteria into a search engine as these sites will pay for the sponsored links which appear at the top of the search engine results. The service has also received complaints about similar sites which offer a Passport checking service too. To report any company who is not complying with the law contact Trading Standards via the Citizens’ Advice Consumer line on 08454 040506.
