SER Participant Joins President Obama On Stage for WIOA Signing ift.tt/1jXEDwr July 23, 2014 Yesterday, National SER President and CEO, Ignacio Salazar and Linda Rivas, President of SER San Antonio joined a select group of colleagues at the White House to witness the historical signing of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. On stage with the President and other dignitaries was Sergio Olivas a recent SER participant in the WIA On–The-Job Training Program in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sergio was hired by 814 Solutions of Albuquerque and has completed 1040 hours of OJT. 814 Solutions was reluctant to let Sergio attend because he was one of the few employees who had the certification to work on their current job. We had to promise to get him back to work on Wednesday morning. Sergio has been trained as an Environmental Engineer focusing on clean water, seeding, turf reinforcement and the operation of industry related equipment. The recent passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) marks a new era for workforce development professionals and our partners in the private sector business, local elected officials, economic development, education, local/regional funders, and our core customers; businesses and job seekers. However, it also marks the beginning of a new set of challenges and opportunities as we prepare to enter the regulatory process. Obama said the program will give states and cities more flexibility in managing their job-training programs. The event can be viewed below. Sergio is the one in the white shirt. ift.tt/1728HQg
