WDC Regulatory Services Manager, Lichelle Guyan, says last night there was a serious attack on a dog in Eden Street, Oamaru that resulted in substantial injuries requiring surgery. We understand the dog survived the night and is being monitored closely. The owner was also injured during the attack but not as a result of a dog bite. They were taken by ambulance to Dunedin hospital. We believe the offending dog is a mastiff/bull dog cross. We ask if you saw or heard the event, or have information that could assist us identify the dog, to contact animal control on 433 0300 immediately. This is not a dog we want to remain unidentified. “It is disappointing that we continue to see a high number of attacks.” From 22 December to 5 January 58 reports were made to animal control, with 60% of those being wandering dogs. In total seven attacks were reported. Four attacks were on stock and other dogs. Three were on people. All three attacks involving people are currently under investigation. In two instances medical treatment was sought from A & E and in all instances the offending dog was a mastiff cross. Mrs Guyan encourages the public to report any attacks. “I am aware some people don’t report attacks where injuries are not substantial, however, it is useful for animal control to have a record of dog behaviour should a more serious incident occur.”
