SERMON QUESTIONS 22/9/13 1. Read Genesis 12:1-7. What promises are given to Abraham? (All Abraham’s stories revolve around these promises in some way.) 2. Read Genesis 22. Which promise is being tested here? 3. “Ancient Eastern cultures were often not as individualistic as our own… Since everyone was part of the family, and no one lived apart from the family, these things were only sought for the entire clan… The oldest son got the majority of the estate and wealth so the family would not lose its place in society.” (Counterfeit Gods, T Keller, p 8,9) With this in mind, how might God’s command seem to Abraham? 4. How did Abraham respond to the test? V3 5. Do you think Abraham was trusting God? V5 cf Hebrews 11:17-19 6. Why do you think God tested Abraham like this? Could his affection for Isaac have become adoration of Isaac? Could the blessings of God’s covenant have come to meant more than the God who blesses? 7. What are some ways this passage makes us look forward to the substitution of the Lamb of God for us? (eg 2, 8, 14, and 2 Chronicles 3:1 John 1:29 JOHN 3:16 Romans 8:32) 8. How does God respond to Abraham’s faith in vs 15-18 cf Gen 12:1-3 9. Is there a sense in which we can reply to God, “Lord, because You have done this and have not withheld your Son, your only Son, I will surely bless you.”
