SERPENT RIVER FIRST NATION RE: Criticism about Propane Heat Conversion __________________________________________ Opening Reflection: my observation, when people complain in the community and they seem to be chronic about it; there is something going on that isnt so much others issues - its usually that person and their team of crusaders. Harm to community spirit, division and pitting people against one another is a very dark undertaking. In this case, these recent round of complaints and innuendo is targeting sympathy from the apathetic, the angry, and the faithful expert dagger-throwing members who just hate the chief - this is your explanation. THIS IS ABOUT PROPANE - keep your political garbage in the trash can and quit spreading it around the community! So, lets set the record straight for those hiding behind the keyboard throwing daggers and chastising the chief for propane heat in Serpent River First Nation. Last year, SRFN made a conversion to propane from fuel. The reasons are as follows: 1) Cost of maintaining the outdated fuel furnaces was exuberant and left to the tenant, seemed unreasonable - the old furnaces and tanks were outdated; 2) Efficiency and Cost - the cost of propane is far less than the rising cost of fuel - the furnaces that were installed are far more superior than the forced air heating - staged heating is more cost efficient; 3) Environmentally, propane is much better for the environment. Spilled fuel and fumes in the houses created a long list of complaints and undue pressure on maintenance staff in events where spills occurred; 4) Replacement obligations of the bands social housing policy under replacement reserves influenced the decision to invest well over .5M$ to ensure that we were up to spec and that all heating systems were modernized. Criticism - it is the chiefs fault that people are freezing - its the chiefs new way of controlling the people. ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? Lets look at this for a second: - Who pays your bills? - Who may or may not have bad credit? - Who does or doesnt know how to budget? - Who should assist you should you have budget needs? - Do you have a job? - Do you receive an income? CLARIFICATION: McDougall Fuels was recently just brought to the table because there were complaints about propane gas. (The complaints were not even clear - but folks sure made it political, as always, and again blamed the chief.) The result of a recent re-negotiation: I secured an extension of a .23c DISCOUNT on propane gas until the end of 2014. You may recall that this was to end in October - well, I stood up for the people and threatened our supplier (not sure why I did that) - a political threat to them; that works, just not sure that the way it came about is ethical. FILL UP - PAY UP YOUR ACCOUNTS. We have a social services program here - if they are not supporting those in need - I am surprised - we do have a social safety net here. The Supplier OWNS the tanks - the supplier holds the contract - and yes we have very solid pricing. The discount is accessible to you too! Laura Jones - is this part of yours and your haters clubs recent bash!???? Probably not. Well I suggest you get on the horn and cackle to the masses that they should have their tanks filled up! The reality about propane - its regulated for safety, and environmental reasons. The tanks are always owned by the supplier - anywhere! This absolved the liability from the FN and ensure that the supply is accessible; BUT PEOPLE NEED TO PAY UP THEIR ACCOUNTS! No more going to the gas bar to buy a jerry-can of diesel to fill up your tank. These are band homes - Laura Jones and the rest who want to slam me and accuse me of some draconian motive (chief just want to control the people) - what a JOKE! - REMEMBER: it was COUNCIL who approved the conversion - it was COUNCIL who VOTED! The CHIEF DID NOT VOTE!!!! Perhaps you cast your criticism at all council members! My opinion - Get A LIFE!!!!! DO YOUR JOB - and QUIT complaining about things that are quite clearly your responsibility!!! Look at everything that is handed to you - and appreciate things that you have that,-- in my opinion; ARE NOT YOUR ENTITLEMENTS!!! There are many people who would love to have paid rental rate that some have here in this community and still ache, moan and spread apathy - for the should purpose to cultivate a collective animosity!!! YOU ARE SO DAM UNGRATEFUL AND DONT DESERVE WHAT YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED!! Perhaps reviewing the rental regime and looking at who has land here and who paid next to nothing for their CMHC Units - while other now pay way more for their units - LETS LOOK AT LAND - CPs - and People who have dirt cheap obligations to their homes - RENTAL REVIEWS….hmmmm! I wonder??? Lets shake up the arrears issues while we are at it - or people who OWE money to the band!!! NOTE: We do have relief routes for people who are challenged with heating their homes. There has been a discussion on winter subsides - this is one of the reasons I drew a line in the sand for an extended discount and I made that happen - for the good of all of the community. Come out to the next meeting - lets have some real discussion about real issues!! Instead of the BS slinging around and trying to haul the Chief down - you only make me more determined. What is happening in the process is that all this BS is holding back the community and dividing our people. Well - the fuel issue….is just fuelling my determination that much more to start calling folks to the carpet - come out and have your complaints in writing and be willing to stand their and speak to them in a civilized manner and articulate SOLUTIONS - if there is in fact a PROBLEM. I have a strange suspicion that the only problem in the community is the senseless spreading of apathy to cultivate harm on our community - for some weird and stupid political gain! I will guarantee you this - the propane issue and your little crusade is gonna open up a can of worms that you are finally gonna have to deal with -that includes your following. I can also guarantee you this - that if people dont pay their bills - they will have to find other means to find relief - trashing the chief wont make that happen - and people can no longer just go to the gas bar and put diesel in their tanks. In conclusion - TO ALL SRFN MEMBERS; if you have an issue or a concern regarding heating - my cell# is 705-261-1865 PLEASE CALL: we will ensure that you have heat for you and your family; one way or another.
