SERVICE. Always a deeply moving experience to share experience, strength and hope with jailed addicts. Tonight we practiced meditation as a practical tool for: acknowledging the distractions that can take us toward a drink/drug, taking a pause to recall our addiction, then coming back to sober thinking. To keep coming back. Ive been so fortunate to be a part of the strong Nashville recovery community who organizes this volunteer work. What a grounding experience it has been to serve in this foundational capacity amid my own lifes imbalances of late. Talk about perspective... I am incredibly grateful for opportunities to be of service where I can truly offer my best resources and solutions, tried and true in my own life. In 2012, I trained with the Prison Yoga Project, and received so much more than yoga training. From that 2.5 day intensive, I came to understand how to fuse my tough-girl energy with a sensitive compassion, to effectively help those living in constant fear and tension - and simultaneously, voluntarily participating in rehabilitative programs while incarcerated. I later learned to focus on sharing the parts of my practice that have historically brought me serenity amidst chaos - breathing and meditation. Asana has never been a priority for me when it comes to practical tools for cultivating peace of mind. When I return to DC at the end of this month, Ill aim to find venues for serving in these ways. I could have landed in jail plenty of times. My addiction consequences were less visible, and more internal. Less tangible, more emotional. Less legal, more interpersonal. But Id be willing to assume that some of those gals in the jail here know my pain very, very well. Again - so grateful for Nashvilles recovery community. And grateful to be sober. OM Shanti...
