SEVENTH PLACE: Spoon “They Want My Soul” (38 points, 7 ballots) Fan anticipation for Spoon LP #8 could not have been much higher four years on from the ambivalently-received “Transference,” with only Divine Fits to tide us over, but Daniel, Eno & Co. came through famously with 37 taut minutes of that classic Spoon sound (“Do You”, the titular jam) augmented with the new wrinkles needed to keep it interesting (“New York Kiss”, “Outlier”). I’ve been waving the fanboy flag for fellow Austin native Richard Linklater this year with ‘Boyhood’, and I think there’s something in the water down there that allows him and Spoon to keep making impressive works that feel totally human and real, so easily relatable, but that are admirably funky and cool without seeming to try too hard at it. Britt Daniel’s rasp sounds glorious, the lyrics are substantial but never awkward, the hooks and structures are bulletproof. With 4 classic albums already under their belts, producing a new one that would be considered amongst the best of their career might sound like a daunting task, but with “They Want My Soul,” Spoon again show they are playing in another league.
