SEVERE WEATHER BULLETIN NUMBER SIX TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING: TROPICAL STORM “BASYANG” (KAJIKI) ISSUED AT 11:00 PM, 31 JANUARY 2014 “BASYANG” HAS SLIGHTLY WEAKENED AND IS NOW APPROACHING CEBU. Location of eye/center:At 10:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Storm “BASYANG” was estimated based on all available data in the vicinity of Ubay, Bohol (10.0°N, 124.5°E). Strength: Maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. Movement:Forecast to move West at 39 kph Forecast Positions: Tropical Storm “BASYANG” is expected to be at 306 km Northwest of Puerto Princesa City by tomorrow evening and at 1343 km West Northwest of Puerto Princesa City or outside the PAR by Sunday evening. • PUBLIC STORM WARNING SIGNAL #2 (Winds of 61-100 kph is expected in atleast 24 hours) Luzon: Northern Palawan incl. Calamian Group of Islands Visayas: Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Siquijor, Cebu, Camotes Island, Bohol, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran Province, Samar and Eastern Samar Mindanao : Camiguin, Dinagat Province, Surigao del Norte incl. Siargao Is., Northern Part of Surigao del Sur and Northern Part of Agusan del Norte Potential Impacts of the Winds •Moderate damage to agriculture •Rice and corn adversely affected •Few large trees uprooted •Large number of nipa and cogon houses partially or totally unroofed •Some old galvanized iron roofing may roll off •Travel by all types of sea vessels is risky •Travel by all types of aircrafts is risky • PUBLIC STORM WARNING SIGNAL #1(Winds of 30-60 kph is expected within the next 36 hours) Luzon: Rest of Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Masbate and Ticao Island Visayas: Northern Samar Mindanao: Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, rest of Agusan del Norte, rest of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Northern part of Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Zamboanga del Norte Potential Impacts of the Winds •Twigs and branches of trees may be broken •Some banana plants may tilt or land flat on the ground •Rice in flowering stage may suffer significant damage •Some nipa and cogon houses may be partially unroofed •Sea travel of small seacrafts and fishing boats is risky •Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signal #2 and #1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas under signal #2 are alerted against storm surges. •Estimated rainfall amount is from 5 – 15 mm per hour (moderate - heavy) within the 400 km diameter of the Tropical Storm. •Tropical storm “Basyang” is expected to cross Cebu City, Negros Provinces, Guimaras, Southern Panay, Northern Palawan and will exit to the West Philippine Sea. •Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon and the eastern and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon due to the surge of Northeast Monsoon. •The public and local DRRMCs concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 5 AM tomorrow.
