SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE - MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning for STRONG WINDS for WELLINGTON & WAIRAPAPA and HEAVY RAIN for the TARARUA RANGE. Severe northwest gales are likely in Wellington and Wairarapa from this afternoon through to Saturday night, with gusts of 120km/h in exposed places. The strongest winds are likely to be on Saturday when gusts of 140km/h are possible for Wellington and 150km/h for Wairarapa, especially about exposed hill tops such as the Rimutaka Hill Road. Winds of this strength have the potential to damage trees, powerlines, unsecured structures and possibly lift roofs as well as making driving hazardous. In the 28 hours from 6pm Friday to 10pm Saturday, expect 150 to 200mm of rain in the Tararua Range. Peak intensities of 15 to 20mm/hr and possibly up to 25mm/hr or more for a time on Saturday. Rivers and streams are likely to rise rapidly and slips and surface flooding are possible. Take care this weekend! - Kerry
