SEVERE WEATHER WARNING for DESTRUCTIVE WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL For people in parts of the Gulf Country Forecast District. Issued at 1:21 pm Friday, 29 November 2013. Synoptic Situation: At 10am AEST, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alessia was situated approximately 150 kilometres west of Mornington Island and moving slowly eastwards towards the Queensland/Northern Territory border. Ex-Tropical Cyclone is expected to remain slow moving today. Thunderstorms associated with Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alessia may produce destructive winds, with peak gusts in excess of 125km/h, about parts of the Gulf Country today. Heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, is also expected to develop about parts of the Gulf Country today. 6 hour totals of up to 100 to 150mm are possible. Currently, on radar it has been identified that an area of potentially destructive winds may be occuring in areas between the Queensland/Northern Territory border and Mornington Island. Locations which may be affected include Burketown, Mornington Island and Westmoreland Station. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure loose outdoor items. * Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. * Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. * Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 7:25 pm.
