SEVERE WEATHER WARNING for HEAVY RAINFALL For people in the Flinders, North West Pastoral, North East Pastoral and parts of the Eastern Eyre Peninsula and Mid North districts. Issued at 5:17 am Friday, 9 January 2015. A low is expected to develop over the far north of South Australia today and move slowly southwards during Saturday and Sunday to be south of Port Lincoln by Sunday evening. This system combined with a tropical airmass will produce areas of heavy rain, possible thunderstorms and local flooding, with very heavy rain and widespread flooding expected in the Northeast Pastoral northwest of Marree and in the far northeast of the Northwest Pastoral. Heavy rain is forecast to develop near the northern border overnight and gradually spread southward during Friday and the weekend. By midnight Friday, rainfalls of 20-80 mm are likely with some falls of 80-120 mm north of about Marree. This forecast rainfall is likely to lead to widespread and significant flooding. Another broad area of rain and thunderstorms is affecting southern parts of the warning area and is forecast to continue overnight and during Friday, with rainfalls of 20-80 mm likely. Localised heavier falls may produce 100 mm. This heavy rain is in addition to rain that has fallen on Thursday and may lead to flash flooding overnight and during Friday. Locations which may be affected include Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Hawker. Haeavy rain and widespread flooding is forecast for Saturday and Sunday and is expected to extend further southeastwards from the current warning area. Travellers need to be aware that road conditions may be adversely affected and travel plans may need to be reconsidered. Some communities may become isolated. 43 mm has been recorded at Marree since 9 am. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Dont drive, ride or walk through flood water; * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains; * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe. The next warning is due to be issued by 8:20 am. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 215.
