SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR SOUTHLAND. ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1107hrs 03-Sep-2013 A vigorous cold front is expected to reach the lower South Island by midnight tonight (Tuesday), then move rapidly north over the country during Wednesday. Strong to gale southerlies spread over the country behind this front, with snow to low levels about southern and eastern parts of the South Island. Snow is expected to lower to 100 metres about Southland and southern parts of Otago during Wednesday morning. This Watch is for the possibility that snow accumulations may approach warning amounts above 300 metres about Southland and southern parts of Otago during Wednesday, People are advised that snow is likely to affect the higher level roads and drivers are urged to exercise caution. In addition, bitterly, strong cold southerlies are likely to cause stress to vulnerable stock and make outdoor pursuits hazardous. Forecasters will continue to monitor the situation and people in these areas are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecast in the event part of this Watch is upgraded to a Warning. *Edited by deepsouthweather for relevant Southland content.
