SEYITHAN AKBALIK The Great Britain team enjoyed multi medal success at the Luxor Open in Egypt today. However, any joy was tempered by the very sad news of the passing of Turkish athlete, Seyithan Akbalik, who had earlier competed in the mens -63kg competition and our thoughts and prayers are with Seyithans family, friends and the members of the Turkish team and federation. Ruebyn Richards claimed GBs first gold in Egypt, with a stylish victory over the home favourite, Ghofran Zaki. Jordan Gayle took silver in the hugely competitive -63kg category. And there were also bronze medals for Georgia Barnes (-49kg), Mike Harvey (-63kg), Martin Stamper (-63kg) and Andrew Deer (-74kg). Ruebyn enjoyed a five match run to the -68kg title in what is a new weight for the Nottingham born player. In what were clearly difficult circumstances for all players, he progressed smoothly to a final in which he dominated, running out a 10-3 winner against the Egyptian, Zaki. In the -63kg final, Jordan Gayle put in a great performance but found his match in Jaouad Achab, the Belgian claiming the title with a narrow 4-3 win. Achab had already accounted for Mike Harvey in the semi-final whilst Jordan had beaten team-mate Martin Stamper at the same stage. Georgia Barnes was a whisker away from the -49kg final, also going down on golden point to the wily Lucija Zaninovic after a 6-6 tie, and had to settle for bronze. Ben Haines also went down on golden point to the Spaniard Daniel Barrera and just missed out on the medals. But it has been a sad day for the sport and on behalf of the GB team and all at GB Taekwondo, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of Seyithan Akbalik and all those close to him.
