SF and San Jose stunningly low in charitable giving. My guess: disconnection from social institutions that reinforce charitable giving as a social norm, exorbitant housing costs creating leakages in the economy as wealth is expatriated in the form of rents leaving less to help others, the libertarian streak in Silicon Valley that has trouble seeing other human beings in anything other than a transactional framework. Id also add the socialists among us that believe in human rights as opposed to charity. Human rights are inalienable and use be guaranteed by our government and paid for by progressive taxation, not by the vagaries of a charitable impulse.
