SFBJA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: APRIL SIMPSON April Simpson is a South Florida-based freelance journalist. Her work has appeared in The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, and Tampa Bay Times. She honed her online journalism skills as a Web Producer for The Seattle Times, with whose staff she shared the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Reporting. When asked why she joined the South Florida Black Journalists Association she responded, I JOINED TO CONNECT WITH LOCAL JOURNALISTS, PARTICIPATE IN SKILLS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND CONTRIBUTE TO NABJ AT A LOCAL LEVEL. A 2010-11 U.S. Fulbright Scholar, April is traveling to Africa this month as she and five others have been selected by the International Womens Media Foundation for the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo Reporting Fellowship. As a part of this fellowship, the journalists will examine government, NGO and private sector initiatives to increase development in the region, meet local entrepreneurs, and gain an understanding of the relationship between alternative livelihoods and conflict reduction.
