Woman Builds A Tiny Home And Parks It In Her Friends Backyard JANUARY 11, 2015 Dee Williams lived in a 2,000-square-foot, 3-bedroom home, but then she helped build a schoolhouse in Guatelama in 2004 and got a new perspective on life. When she came home, her large house felt too big. She decided to leave her $1,000/month mortgage behind. She collected together $10,000 ($5,000 for materials and $5,000 for solar panels and low-E windows) and built a 84-square-foot home. It took her three months and once it was ready to go, she got permission from her friends Huge and Annie in Olympia, Washington and pulled it up and parked it in their backyard. For seven years, she would take her home and come and go, but during the two years preceding this video, which was posted in 2013, she remained where she is. There are many different types of tiny homes. Dees tiny house is very minimalistic. It doesnt have running water and needs to dispose of her leavings as she isnt allowed to compost outside the house. It wasnt an easy transition, but years later, she is happy with her new place. She works for PAD (Portland Alternative Dwellings) and helps design and build tiny homes for others. Just this last year, in April of 2014, she wrote a book titled, The Big Tiny: A Built-It-Myself Memoir. In her book, she talks about what lead to her decision to build and live in a tiny home. The book mentions a near-death experience she had and how that also encouraged her to change her life.
