A gauge of 30-day volatility on the Shanghai Composite Index rose to 42.3 on Jan. 19, the highest among the 15 biggest global benchmark indexes tracked by Bloomberg and up from its decade-low 9.4 in July. “For exchange operators, volatility is OK,” Ramaswami said. “Not having any volatility is a problem.” The CSRC has approved trading of Shanghai Stock Exchange 50 A-Share Index exchange-traded fund options from Feb. 9, Shanghai Securities News reported Jan. 9, citing a weekly briefing by the securities regulator. Derivatives transactions climbed 52 percent to 40 million in the quarter, with trading of China A-50 futures increasing to more than 17 million contracts, according to SGX. “We are still in the early stages of pretty sustainable growth,” Ramaswami said. “We are well positioned on China.” SGX also plans to pursue a trading link with both the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses, Ramaswami said. Hong Kong is taking steps to increase trading through the Shanghai exchange connect that started in November amid discussions to set up a separate link with Shenzhen. The macro space is going to continue to present many opportunities, given the fight against low growth and disinflation in Japan and Europe, financial liberalization in China and leadership changes in India and Indonesia,”
