SHAABAA MIVESA Cup Quarter - Finals The top seeds – Goldberry, Insular Square, RDAK and Cebu Landmasters – advanced to the semifinal round as they disposed of their respective opponents in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) last Sunday at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts in Canduman, Mandaue City. The top-ranked Goldberry Suites unleashed a vicious second period run that saw them outscore San Jose Bakeshop, 25-9, to gain an 82-50 win. After playing the in the shadows for most of the elimination round, Jeremy Huang made his presence felt as he scored 25 points including eight in the aforementioned rally that put them up, 41-22, at halftime. His brother, Justin Huang, added 10. Meanwhile, the youthful Insular Square defeated Alberto’s Pizza, 57-46, behind the 19 points of forward Jasper Diaz, the 13 of Job Shan and the 11 of star guard Ed Macasling. The game was close in the first half which ended with a 21-all deadlock. But Insular Square came to life in the third canto and broke the game wide open with a 21-11 run that gave them a 42-32 lead going to the fourth period. In other games, the defending champions Cebu Landmasters ousted Gaisano Capital, 63-56, behind a pivotal 17-8 stretch in the second stanza which gave them a 32-21 lead at halftime. Franco Te lived up to his billing as the team’s top gun, tallying 23 points while Ervin Lopena provided some much-needed support with 16 markers. Finally, the RDAK Transporters leaned on a fast start to rout the Milco Fresh Eggs, 84-54. Bernard Chioson led the Transporters’ balanced attack with 12 points and was backed by Justin Gatchalian’s 11 and Junie Alejandro’s 10 markers. The semifinal round is expected to be a fierce affair with the Goldberry Suites facing off against the Cebu Landmasters in a rematch of last year’s finals while Insular Square battles the RDAK Transporters. The two semifinal match-ups will be disputed in a best-of-three series.
