SHABBAT SHALOM -- VAYIGASH -- FATHERS AND SONS/MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS How do we practically apply the Torah that we learn? Our tradition demands that we put our learning into action -- to have Torah come to life in the efforts of our spirit and in the works of our hands. We are to be unafraid to engage in the world -- to serve in the repair of this world with a willing heart -- and as importantly, with good cheer and kindness. This week, our Torah presents Joseph inviting his father Jacob to join him in Egypt while there is a horrible famine in the land. Joseph says to Jacob -- come to Egypt, and I will sustain you. Our sages think of this not as physical sustenance, but rather as a spiritual sustenance -- for surely, Joseph would not let his father starve. Rather, this gesture is a sensitive regard for what his father needs (emotionally and spiritually), apart from what will keep him alive. Joseph in demonstrating his responsibility of acting in this world, tends to the uplift of his fathers soul. How do we anticipate certain situations with thoughtfulness beyond duty -- and with an attitude that befits courtesy, and a modicum of understanding beyond ourselves? How do we balance our strongly held opinions with a demonstrative tenderness that showcases wisdom? We must not go through the motions of doing what is expected of us. Our tradition, with Josephs example, show us that a willing heart is as important as the deeds that we do. May we be resolved to care for each others souls as we promulgate our resources. May 2015 be a year of prosperity -- spiritually, emotionally, and physically for each of us and for our loved ones. As we reflect on 2014 and as we receive this last Shabbat in 2015, as a year comes and goes, please listen to Eviatar Banais arresting song, Avot uVanim (Fathers and Sons) -- https://youtube/watch?v=yp1T0t4TrQ4 Shabbat Shalom. #josephandhisfather #jacobandhisson
