SHABBAT SHALOM -- YAYEISHEV -- LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS When do we reflect about the trajectory of our life? How do we feel ourselves change and grow as we mature, dropping outdated ideas, allowing twinges of disquiet to come to rest? And too, how do we feel ourselves harden -- retreating into defensive positions, circling our wagons around our sharp opinions, so that we may feel a modicum of protection? How much can we change and adapt to our environment, and how much of who we are is encoded in our emotional genetics? We find Joseph imprisoned in Egypt, confined to dwell upon his innermost thoughts of purpose and to dissect his truths. He has the opportunity to ask himself the hardest questions -- to scrutinize his thoughts, and ultimately to take responsibility for his actions. He is able to analyze his character and come to terms of who he is, as opposed to who he says he is. He is able to let go -- to cease his ownership of each moment, and while in jail, he has the time to explore his connection to that which is beyond himself. In time, Joseph will emerge from this narrow place without fear -- he will present himself as self-assured, grounded with God. As he comes out into the gloom of the world, he will faithfully light his candle each day, recognizing the simple yet profound miracle of his existence, and he will see beyond his immediate needs -- recognizing his abundance -- and offering himself as a blessing and as one dedicated to shining his light so that others may find their own, and follow.
