SHAPEWEAR Last week, between coaching, cleaning and training - TopicsExpress

SHAPEWEAR Last week, between coaching, cleaning and training at the gym, I found myself with a spare hour or so. I rushed home to squeeze in some housework (the usual washing and meal prepping). As I was tidying up I had the TV on and This Morning was on with Gok Wan (Fashion Stylist). Gok was presenting a segment on ‘shapewear’, commonly referred to as ‘spanx’. The line used throughout this segment was something along the lines of ‘Let Gok fix your body issues’. This really got my back up! Now, lets be clear… I am not sitting here saying that women shouldn’t wear shapewear on certain occasions if they see fit. You have a wedding coming up and you want your stomach to look a little flatter and your bum lifted a little, by all means chuck a pair on. I don’t think you will be comfortable in them but they will help with the above problem areas. BUT ARE YOU REALLY SOLVING THE PROBLEM? NO! Shapewear or any related product does serve a purpose but it does not ‘fix your body issues’. It masks them temporarily and is a SHORT-TERM, QUICK-FIX. When you remove them are you any happier with your figure? And if you are happy with your body and comfortable in your own skin then why wear them in the first place? If you are not happy with your figure, for whatever reason then you need to do something about it. This should include a healthy lifestyle including eating properly and exercising. Getting yourself to a gym where there are qualified personnel who will teach you what you need to know. Over the last three years, I have coached so many people who have joined gyms and felt intimidated, had no idea what to do or have been worried about how they look and have been afraid to ask for help. By putting themselves in a gym environment (Crossfit in this case) where an individual is there to help them and guide them along the way, they have really excelled. Taking themselves out of their comfort zone has paid off a million times over as it is not merely a physical journey but a mental one too. By overcoming fears, setting goals and achieving things that they did not think were possible, they have become more confident, not afraid to challenge the norm and the physical benefits of having a fitter, stronger body have been pretty rewarding too. In this sort of environment, people are taught how to move correctly in a small group environment and taught that you do not need to slog your guts out for eternity to achieve results! In fact running on a treadmill for hours on end will not get you the results you are looking for! In addition to being taught about the right types of foods to eat and that the food industry line of Low Fat = Good is NOT HEALTHY (more to come on this later!). I care about my clients, every single one and I care about how they feel physically and mentally. I want to help them in their journey and facilitate change in their lifestyle, whatever that may be, to achieve long-term health and well-being benefits. So my message here is - Invest in your health and make important lifestyle choices. Small changes add up to a BIG change so it does not need to be overwhelming but the benefits of overall better health and fitness is priceless. And it cannot be achieved through wearing shapewear!!
