SHE JUST SAID HMMM. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Dear Nyaba, After my brother was invited to join the land of our ancestors, my mind has traveled several thousands of miles in search of the “main reason” why “Nawuni” AKA “Nagmene” also known as “Nyame” spent so much time creating man only to “uncreate” him when the people around him need him most. Nyaba, on my mental journey, my mind made a brief stop at a village called “woman”. The village called woman is a very beautiful village with kind-hearted, affable people. However, the people who belong to this village (they are called women) have presented me with a puzzle more confounding and confusing than the sphinx’s puzzle to Oedipus, more complex than the mystery of death. Nyaba, in this village “NOTHING” means something and you should be on your toes. Nothing is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out, upside down, and backwards. In this village, when they say “GO AHEAD” (With Raised Eyebrows): This is a dare, one that will result in a woman getting upset over Nothing. And when they say “GO AHEAD” (with Normal Eyebrows): This means I give up or do what you want because I dont care. You will get a Raised Eyebrow Go Ahead in just a few minutes, followed by Nothing. Nyaba, the worst and most dreaded language here is when the people of this village say “Hmmmm” This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A hmm means she thinks you are an idiot at that moment, and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here arguing with you over Nothing. There is a second version of “hmmm”. This is the SOFT “Hmmm” Again, this is not a word, but a non-verbal statement. Soft hmmm means that she is content. Your best bet is not to move or breathe, and she will stay content. Nyaba, this Christmas day, the daughter of my father-in-law has just said “hmmm” it’s half hard and half soft. Since then, I have neither moved nor breathed. What should I do?
