SHE WAS A GOOD PIG Good morning facefam. A peek out the back - TopicsExpress

SHE WAS A GOOD PIG Good morning facefam. A peek out the back door shows a bit of light just starting in the east. Old wives saying, red sky in morning, sailors take warning? Yep its very dark pink. There is a haze across the corn fields and pasture to the west, and it seems just a tad too humid. Im thinking a stormy day ahead. The flock is quietly walking up the lane, oh wait they found the tomato sauce making leftovers, so that will take a while. Im a bit sad this morning. Yesterday morning, Kate went to the farrowing pen, excited to maybe have new piglets. Mabel always dances out to get her breakfast. When she didnt appear, we naturally thought oh goodie! piggies. She wasnt due until the 10th, and her milk line wasnt near full. She wasnt fretful or cranky, which sows can be at term. We had no reason to think there was a problem, but Mabel is gone. Evidently between last check at 11 pm and first light, she went into labor, prolapsed and died. The fact that we didnt see it coming, that is was unusual and that it had nothing to do with her health, should make it easier.... but it doesnt. The fact that I didnt hear anything out my bedroom window, which faces the pens and is close enough to hear them all snore, doesnt make it easier either. She was a sweet lady, who never walked, she danced. A pig isnt built for dancing, but she did. She was a great momma to her other litters, a lovely hostess to visitors and took treats with restraint. We have sold all her offspring, so Mabels line stops here. Rest easy girl and dance across the rainbow bridge. My dear friend Beth Rowland lost her sweet donkey Nelson yesterday as well. Perhaps they will dance together. I leave you today with this. Two legged, four legged, furred, skinned or feathered. We are all in this together. Respect and love all the creatures you meet today and know that we are all a piece of the greater being. I wish you all a peaceful and productive day and as always..... Keep calm and remember
