SHEFFIELD 39 REBELS 51 The ‘Cases’ Somerset Rebels moved themselves into 2nd place with an emphatic 12 point win at Sheffield, though the meeting was marred by a bad crash involving Sheffield’s Andre Compton in the penultimate heat, which saw the Sheffield rider taken to hospital as a consequence. It was Sheffield who took the early lead and were 6 points up after just 3 heats, but a 5-1 by Somerset skipper Olly Allen and Paul Starke in heat 4 brought the Rebels back into the match and just two heats later the scores were level at 18-all. The tide finally turned Somerset’s way in heat 10 when Brady Kurtz and Pontus Aspgren combined for the Rebels’ second maximum heat win of the night, and a 4-2 two races later increased Somerset’s advantage to 6 points with just 3 heats remaining. Disaster struck the Rebels in heat 13 when Allen, who was unbeaten from his three races, suffered a bad fall as the riders exited the 2nd bend, but although he was eventually able to walk back to the pits, he will now miss tomorrow nights return match against Sheffield at the Oaktree Arena. Still 6 points to the good, heat 14 looked as if Sheffield would be cutting that lead back to 4 points with Compton and Taylor Poole on a 4-2 for the home side, but just as Compton was exiting the final bend, his bike suffered a mechanical failure, throwing the Sheffield rider violently to the ground. After lengthy on-track treatment Compton was eventually taken by ambulance to hospital and the final heat was completed, a 5-1 courtesy of Brady Kurtz and Nick Morris confirming Somerset’s win and with it the maximum 4 league points. “First and foremost our thoughts are with Andre [Compton],” said Somerset team manager Garry May afterwards, “nobody likes to see a rider fall, and Andre’s was a particularly bad one, and on behalf of everyone at Somerset speedway we wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.” “Of course we are extremely happy with the 4 league points, especially after going 6 points down early doors, Brady rode a blinder, as did Olly until his crash, and he will now miss tomorrow night’s home match against Sheffield as he’s not feeling 100%, but this was an all-round team performance, though all that is secondary to Andre’s well-being.” SHEFFIELD 39: Taylor Poole 16+1, Richard Lawson 8+1, Andre Compton 8, Ben Wilson 3, Leigh Lanham 2+1, Ty Proctor 2, Josh Bates 0 SOMERSET 51: Brady Kurtz 13, Mick Morris 9+1, Oliver Allen 9, Charles Wright 6+2, Paul Starke 6+1, Pontus Aspgren 5+1, Todd Kurtz 3+1 Premier League points: Sheffield 0 Somerset 4
