SHEKARAU’S CAMP DEFEATS WALI’S IN KANO PDP CONGRESS Published on Monday, 25 August 2014 05:02 A candidate backed by former governor Ibrahim Shekarau has defeated the candidate from Foreign Affairs Minister Aminu Wali’s camp in Saturday’s election of chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State. Alhaji Rabiu Dansharu polled 1,109 to defeat Senator Mas’ud El-Jibril Doguwa, a one-time state party chairman, who got 458 votes in the keenly contested election. A total of 88 votes were declared invalid. Shekarau, who is now Minister of Education, defected to the PDP from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January. Daily Trust learnt that he pushed for the candidature of Dansharu, who was the vice chairman of Kano South during the tenure of the dissolved caretaker committee chaired by Dr. Hassan Kafayos. Sources in the party told our correspondent that following the failure of the consensus arrangement, Shekarau’s men swung into action, mobilising support for Dansharu early last week. To balance the political equation in the state, the party had zoned the chairmanship position to Kano South Senatorial District. Shekarau and Wali are from Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano central senatorial zone. “You know the election was conducted when the candidate of Ambassador Wali petitioned the election committee that he was not satisfied with the consensus arrangement,” a source said. “Out of the 15 caucus members, 13 voted for Dansharu, while only two voted for Senator Masaud. Angered by the outcome, Masaud insisted that the election should be conducted.
