SHERIDAN — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch and hazardous weather outlook for Sheridan County and the Bighorn Mountains from Wednesday evening into Thursday afternoon. Nighttime lows will dip below freezing through Friday night and an estimated 3-6 inches of wet, heavy snow may accumulate in the region. Meteorologist Brian Tesar, with the National Weather Service in Billings, Montana, said a Canadian air mass is sweeping down the Rocky Mountains, setting up a deep layer of cold air that is picking up significant amounts of moisture. Tesar said the temperatures — an expected high of 48 degrees today and 39 degrees Thursday — are within the region’s range of seasonal temperatures but that they are on the extreme end of the scale. “We may see record low temperatures by the time it’s all over,” Tesar said. “It’s on the extreme end of the range. It’s certainly not typically expected this time of year.” At the same time, Tesar stressed that this early snowfall and drop in temperatures is not indicative of the coming winter. - See more at: thesheridanpress/?p=24736#sthash.Mu40yHw7.dpuf
