SHERIFF’S OFFICE MAKES AN ARREST IN THE NEWSTEAD FATAL HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT Buffalo, NY – Erie County Undersheriff Mark Wipperman announced on today, the arrest of Matthew Jurek, 26 of Akron, in the Newstead fatal hit and run incident on January 5. Members of the Erie County Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit and Detectives Bureau worked together on the extensive investigation culminating in the arrest of the suspect. The suspect surrendered, with his attorney present, to Deputies Friday evening, January 9, and was consequently charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in the death of Francis J. Meldrum, Jr. (a Class D Felony). The Sheriff’s Office credits the community at large and the Greater Buffalo Crime Stoppers Tip Line in the apprehension of the defendant. The tips received through the tip line provided crucial information which resulted in the seizure and impounding of the defendant’s vehicle. After the Deputies obtained a court order to seize Jurek’s vehicle, forensic personnel from the Erie County Central Police Services Lab searched the vehicle for evidence. The evidence collected was the final factor leading to the arrest of the defendant. Erie County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on Monday, January 5, and it was determined that the cause of death was due to blunt impact injuries to the head, torso and extremities. Jurek is currently being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending his arraignment scheduled for January 12, in Newstead Town Court.
