SHIFTING FIRING RANGE TO YOUSMARAG UNACCEPTABLE: HURRIYAT (G) Srinagar, Sep 2 (KNS): While terming the government plan of shifting the Tosomaidan firing range to the hill resort Yusmarg as unacceptable, Hurriyat Conference (G) said that this is an important place among the health resorts of the Kashmir, where 3 lakh tourists visit annually and shifting of the firing range will ruin this entire area and it will not only prove destructive for the forests of that area but it will render thousands of people of that area homeless and it will also destroy many fresh water sources there. Hurriyat expressed surprise and sorrow that the state government is acting as facilitators for the Indian army to grabbing our land and to save their chairs, they don’t raise their voices against this compulsion. In a statement issued to KNS, the people of the concerned area were instructed to register their protest against this shifting and come forward to save their and the future of their children. Hurriyat Conference will stand with them and will collect public opinion in this respect and if need arises we will also support the programs of the public. Hurriyat said that there is already thousands of kanals of state land illegally allotted to the Indian army and the process still continuous. The presence of army camps in the green belts of the state is extremely harming the environment, water resources and forests of this oppressed land and it has created many new issues for the state and the situation can any time turn ugly. According to the statement, Yusmarg is world famous for its natural beauty and virginity and thousands of people worldwide travel to Kashmir to visit this place. This area is the home for many rare, fresh and pure water sources and it not only provides drinking water for the millions of people but it also serves as a vital source for the irrigation for thousands of acres of agriculture land. The shifting of firing range to Yusmarg will destroy hundreds of kanals of the forest land and hundreds of families residing in the surrounding areas whose occupation is to graze their cattle in the green fields of Yusmarg, will become homeless and it will also snatch their livelihood. Hurriyat also criticized the role of state government that they offered many alternate areas to the Indian army in place of the Tosomaidan firing range while as they don’t have any legal or moral authority to do that and nor have they got mandate to offer the state land to the Indian army for their chairs. Hurriyat said that the state government is the custodian of the all the natural resources and lands of the state and its work is to protect them but the rulers of the state didn’t fulfill this responsibility too and they have always mortgaged everything of the state with the New Delhi so that they can enjoy the luxurious life of power. The land grants bill was passed in the assembly during the period of Shaikh Mohammad Abdullah and this bill was made a source to lease out the state land to the outsiders. While warning the resistance at every level to the government’s proposal of shifting the firing range to Yusmarg, Hurriyat Conference appealed the people of that area to rise against the government plan of destroying this place. The anti-Kashmir policies of Modi government have although doubled the responsibilities of the Hurriyat Conference and is working to counter these policies but we can’t remain silent of the shifting of the firing range to the Yusmarg. In this regard we will work hand in hand with the people and will try to collect the public opinion against this. In its first phase, hurriyat is consulting the local people of that area so that they will get aware about the dangers of this firing range and will try to formulate the strategies to counter the situation.
