SHINING VICTORY (1941) Directed by Irving Rapper. With James Stephenson, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Donald Crisp, Barbara ONeil, Montagu Love, Sig Ruman, and G.P. Huntley. Just by looking at the cast, I know its a Hal B. Wallis production,(He was an outstanding producer) and in my opinion one of the most underrated and forgotten films WB ever made. its seldom aired, perhaps thats one reason and largely unknown to most people. Several years ago it aired on TCM at 4AM. I had to stay awake and recorded it. I was delighted as I watched it. I found a film I liked very much that I had never seen before. It has aired one or two times since then. This was Irving Rappers first directing assignment, Shining Victory, a stately adaptation of A.J. Cronin’s play about a brilliant research psychiatrist who works on a treatment for dementia precox. (played by James Stephenson) whose dedication to his work blinds him to the love of his assistant (Geraldine Fitzgerald). A terrific film and with the histrionics on Barbara ONeil adds to its entertainment value. Bette Davis appears as one of the nurses in a good will gesture to Irving Rapper. However, I have watched my copy several times and have not been able to spot her.- I guess her back is to the camera. When I find it scheduled on TCM again, I will post it. (poster misrepresent film somewhat).
