SHIT ON THE HEROES 1 MURTALA RUFAI MOHAMMED Murtala Mohammed was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in 1961 and by April 1966 he has risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel and became Inspector of Signals. After the coup of 1966,Murtala played a crucial role in mobilising opinion among Northern soldiers in Lagos for a second military coup which was postponed three times and took off on the 29th of july 1966 as a result of unplanned sequence of events at Abeokuta in which lt.colonel Okonweze,Major Obienu and others were impulsively shot to death in the Officers Mess by Northern NCOs and burried the rest of Igbo officers alive. Once it became obvious to Northern soldiers in Lagos that killings had started in Abeokuta,Murtala Mohammed,Martin Adamu and others got themselves organised and launched massive brutal killing of Igbos in Lagos.Meanwhile wearing a borrowed uniform,TY Danjuma the a Major who was accompanying General Ironsi on a Nationwide tour,cordoned Government House Ibadan with troops from then 4th Battalion and arrested the General along with Fajuyi(Accounts indicate Danjuma actually ordered the killing of Ironsi and Murtala used his position at the Signals and to communicate messages to his Northern conspirators in other parts of the country urging action with intention to secede. Murtala Mohammed later changed his name to Murtala Ramat Mohammed in 1976 after he became a Head of state.Ref.Nowa Omoigui.
