SHOOTING IN APPLING Here is a press release from the Columbia County Sheriffs Office: This morning at 2:23 a.m., deputies responded to 2550 Louisville Road in Appling for a shooting. Upon arrival deputies located Kenneth Wayne Newman Jr. lying on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to his back. Investigation revealed that Newman came to the residence intoxicated and began damaging property belonging to Richard Green, who resides at the incident location. Newman first threatened to kill Richard and then began punching him. Kenneth then put Richard into a headlock and began choking him as Richard’s son, Evan Christopher Green (15 yoa), entered the kitchen. Evan attempted to stop this altercation to no avail so he retreated to his bedroom and grabbed his .22 caliber rifle. Evan returned to the kitchen yelling at Kenneth (his uncle) to stop choking his dad or he would shoot him. Kenneth continued to choke his dad and Evan shot Kenneth once in the back. There were five other people in the home during this time including Dusti Headley. Witnesses said Headley was also fighting with both Richard and Evan. Headley was charged with False Statements and two counts of Battery ($13,300.00 bond). Newman was transported to GRU and charges are pending against him. No charges against the shooter (Evan).
