SHOOTMedia, The SHOOT! UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championship Hendricks Feels It’s Time for Welterweights to ‘Make Our Own Mark’ If it all goes according to plan, by the time the smoke settles Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX., Georges St. Pierre will be nowhere near the subject of discourse. After St. Pierre put his career on hiatus, following a brilliant 11-title-fight-victory run, a new welterweight champion will be determined as the favorite, Johny Hendricks, takes on Robbie Lawler for the now-vacant title at UFC 171. It is a night dedicated to the 170-pounders as the co-main event features established star Carlos Condit against a potential rising sensation in Tyron Woodley with the winner possibly getting the next crack at the title. Another high-level welterweight main card match includes Jake Shields vs. Hector Lombard and welterweights Rick Story and Kelvin Gastelum are the featured fight on the preliminary card. For Hendricks, who nearly snagged the title away from St. Pierre in November, it makes for the ideal opportunity for this generation to plant its flag. “I can’t think backwards, I have to think forward,” Hendricks said in a Bloody Elbow media call. “Look at our division, it’s a pretty stacked division. Now that Georges has walked away, now it’s time for one of us to make our own mark.”
