SHOP NOTES ON CLEAR COATS: Yes, you can actually apply a powder clear coat to your project. But what are the advantages, and why would I want to add this extra step? 1. It’s required. Some base coat powders actually require a clear coat. This is because they are not UV stable by themselves. They’ll quickly fade in the sun. Fluorescent powders are a good example. 2. It’s recommended. Some powders like metallics and pearls will work fine as a stand alone product. But it’s recommended to clear them to protect the metallic and pearl flake from getting dull and losing their reflective properties. 3. It provides depth. There’s just something about the look of a clear coat over a base coat that gives it an added depth that is just visually stunning! 4. It provides gloss (or not). Clear coats come in a complete range of gloss levels. Everything from a full reflective look, to a satin, down to a zero gloss matt finish. You can give any base coat whatever level of gloss fits your style.
