SHOP STAFF BEWARE OF RINGING THE CHANGES Police in Stirling are investigating a fraud that occurred at Farmfoods food store on Monday 22nd December. Two males, of eastern European / Asian appearance, have purchased a large amount of food and handed over a three figure sum. After the cashier checked the amount of money one of the males has asked to re-count it himself which he was allowed. It is suspected that at this time he has removed a large part of the money without the cashier noticing. He has then handed the money back and after the cashier had placed the money in the till the males have decided to hand back most of their purchase and have requested a refund. Once they left the store the cashier checked her till and found that she had been conned out of a 3 figure sum. These type of crimes are commonly known by the police as ringing the changes and the culprits can be very convincing and will confuse the cashiers when counting out the money and use that as an opportunity to deceive. Shop staff should be aware of this scam and always double check the cash amount before they place it in their till especially if the customer has asked to recount large amounts themselves. If you are suspicious of anyone trying to deceive you in this manner then please contact Police Scotland at the time on 101. If you have any information as to the identity of the two males involved in the Farmsfood fraud then please contact us on 101 and if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
