SHOULD LEFT UNITY BE AN ENGLISH REPUBLICAN SOCIALIST PARTY? POPULATION DISTRIBUTION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM 84% UK population in England 8.5%UK population in Scotland 4.8%UK population in Wales 2.7%UK population in Northern Ireland LEFT UNITY MEMBERSHIP [OCTOBER 16TH 2013 93.3% of LU Membership in England 2.6% of LU Membership in Scotland 3.9% of LU Membership in Wales 0.2% of LU Membership in Northern Ireland ANALYSIS These Statistics suggest that the Left Unity project is far less popular in Scotland than in England despite the historically higher levels of support for socialist and radical politics in Scotland. We can conclude that LU members in Scotland are not fully representative of the variety of Left currents active in Scottish Politics and that LU is making significantly less impact on Scottish Political Life than in England. These Statistics suggest that the Left Unity project is somewhat less popular in Wales than in England despite the historically higher levels of support for socialist and radical politics in Wales. We can conclude that LU is making less impact on Welsh Political life than in England. These statistics suggest that the Left Unity project is very unpopular in Northern Ireland. We can conclude that LU is totally irrelevant to and making no impact on Northern Irish Political Life. We can conclude that Left Unity has more relevance to socialists and other radicals living in England than it does to socialists and other radicals in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and this conclusion should inform the debate at our founding conference. PERHAPS LEFT UNITY CAN BECOME AN ENGLISH REPUBLICAN PARTY THAT CALLS FOR THE BREAK UP OF THE UK, THE END OF THE MONARCHY, FOR IRISH UNITY, SCOTTISH AND WELSH INDEPENDENCE?
