SHOULD LYING IN PARLIAMENT BE A CRIME? Politicians are entrusted with significant power when it comes to making decisions that affect the lives of all Australians. But there is a widespread perception of politicians as untrustworthy and even corrupt. As discussed in one of our earlier blogs, politicians in Australia are protected by parliamentary privilege, which means that they are protected against the adverse legal consequences of things they say while in parliament. But should politicians be made more legally accountable, or even criminally liable, for false statements that they make when parliament is in session?
