SHRAVAN MAAS The Shravan Maas ( Month ) is the 5th month in the Hindu Calendar. During this month, the Nakshatra Shravan is the ruling Star on full Moon day and therefore this month has been named as Shravan. As such, this entire month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and worshiping him during this month is said to bring most auspicious results and blessings of Lord Shiva. Many people observe fast for this entire month and make offerings to Lord Shiva everyday. A large number of people get various Pujas for Lord Shiva performed during this period which gives very auspicious results as per our ancient texts and scripts. Legend Behind Shravan month : As per ancient legends, the churning of sea ( Samudra Manthan ) was done during this month of Shravan. It was a combined effort done by both, the Devatas ( Gods ) & the Danvas ( Demons ). The Sumeru Parvat was used for churning and the Snake Vasuki which circles around the neck of Lord Shiva was used as a rope. Large number of invaluable Gems came out of sea as a result of this churning. However, at the end, poison ( Halahal ) came out which had the capacity to destroy everything. None of the Gods or Demons were able to deal with this poison and ultimately, Lord Shiva came to the rescue. Lord Shiva drank the entire poison and stored it in his throat which turned blue due to poison. Hence, Lord Shiva got the name Neelkantha ( Blue Throat ). This way, Lord Shiva gave a new life to everyone during this month and therefore, this month is supposed to be very auspicious. When Is Shravan Month ? This entire period will be very auspicious for Lord Shiva Devotees and almost everyone of them will observe fast either for the entire month or atleast on every Monday which falls during this period. The mondays which comes during this period are as follows : Things to do in the Month of Shravan : The entire month of Shravan is very auspicious and observing the following can give very good results by the blessings of Lord Shiva. - If possible, a person should keep fast on all the days of Shravan month. He should go to Lord Shiva temple everyday after taking Bath and offer Panchamrut ( A Special preparation made of 5 items viz, milk, curd, ghee, honey & gangajal ) to Lord Shiva as well as Bilva Leaves. A person can consume milk & milk preparations, fruits and other items that are used during fast & pray to Lord Shiva. - If fasting everyday is not possible, then at least every person should keep fast on Mondays of Shravan month. - Wearing a Rudraksha during this month is also considered very auspicious. - A person should recite Maha Mrityunjay Mantra for as many times as possible Importance of Shravan Month Each day of the Shravan Month has its specific significance and ritual. Monday: Is the day of Lord Shiva worship. Tuesday: Gauri is worshiped in every home by women for good health of their family. Wednesday: Is dedicated to vithala, a form of Vishnu or Krishna. Thursday: Are also days of worshiping jupiter or brahaspati and Guru. Friday: for worshiping Lakshmi or tulsi. Saturday: Are for Saturn (Shani). It is also known as Shravan Saturdays, to obtaining wealth. These days are also known as Sampat Sanivara (wealth Saturdays). Sundays: Are meant to worship the Sun God. Sun worship was generally in vedic period and even now, it is so. Especially in Shravan, every Sunday the Sun is worshiped without fail. OM NAMAH SHIVAYA...!!!
