SHTETL REBORN IN CHMIELNIK. Finally I had the chance to spend some more time in the Świętokrzyski Sztetl in Chmielnik which opened last year to visitors. I was regularly visiting Chmielnik for the last 20 years and it has always been enriching to see the change and passion in reception by locals what was the Jewish heritage of the city since XV century. Sometimes the far reaching plans, like renovation of the derelict XVII century synagogue building seamed irrational and utopian. But the local “spiritus movens” Piotr Krawczyk was always passionate and assured that everything is possible. Thanks to the support of the local municipality, European Union funds and grant money from the Polish Minister of Culture and Heritage today the synagogue is back to its prime condition housing very modern, perfectly planned museum of shtetl life in that region. This museum historically and technologically would be a major attraction to visit in any the world capitals, so its location in 4000 inhabitants Chmielnik in South-Central Poland is only adding to the charm and magic of the site. If you travel from Warsaw to Cracow make sure to reserve 3 hours extra for Chmielnik.
