SI Who Shot At Gangster Succumbs to Bullet Wounds Mallikarjuna Bande, the police sub-inspector who sustained a bullet wound during a shootout in Gulbarga on January 8, died at a hospital in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Bande, SI at the Station Bazaar police station, was involved in the shootout involving Munna, who allegedly had connections with the Mumbai underworld. The gangster lay in wait for him inside a house and shot at him point blank when he stepped in. Two bullets had pierced Bande’s skull. Bande was rushed to Basaveshwara Hospital in Gulbarga and later to Hyderabad’s Yashodha Hospital. Following an operation he was put on ventilator support. Bande’s family wanted him treated in London, at the same hospital where Malala Yousufzai, the Pakistani school girl attacked by the Taliban, had been successfully treated for bullet wounds. However, doctors in Hyderabad had said he was in no shape to travel. Uddandappa (47), another policeman injured in the shootout, is undergoing treatment at Global Hospital in Hyderabad. Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, who hails from Gulbarga, visited the Gandhi Hospital mortuary where Bande’s body was kept. He announced an ex-gratia of `15 lakh to the slain SI’s family. “The government will also bear the expenses of his children’s education,” he told reporters. A day after the incident, both the injured policemen were rushed to Hyderabad, a three-hour drive across the Andhra Pradesh border. The policemen were chasing Munna when he ran into a house. The police team managed to rescue four occupants of the house and then barged in. Munna opened fire, injuring both the officers. Subsequently, the policemen fired shots, killing Munna on the spot, ending a four-hour operation. “Uddandappa will be discharged in two or three days,” K Ravindranath, chairman of Global Hospital, said. Last Rites in Village Bande’s last rites will be performed at his native village of Khajuri late on Wednesday or on Thursday. Bande’s immediate family comprises his father, two brothers, an elder sister, wife Mallamma (Madhu), daughter Shivani (6) and Sai Darshan (1). A team of specialists, under the leadership of eminent neurologist Dr Ranganatham, had treated Bande for five days. Experts from NIMHANS, Bangalore, also visited the hospital on Tuesday and monitored his condition. The doctors had started dialysis on him as both his kidneys had stopped functioning on Tuesday evening. Several leaders and organisations, including former chief minister Dharam Singh, Gulbarga district in-charge minister Qamarul Islam and former MLC Shasil Namoshi, have expressed condolences over Bande’s death. Born at Khajuri, Bande studied there till the 10th standard. He completed his BA from SB College in Gulbarga and went on to do an MA in political science from Gulbarga University. He joined the police department in 1997 and started his carrier as a constable at M B Nagar police station. He appeared for departmental exams in 2004 and became a probationary sub-inspector at Maski in Raichur district. After serving in Raghavendra Nagar (Gulbarga), Wadi and Humnabad, he was transferred to Station Bazar in Gulbarga six months ago.
