SIDES LOOK FOR CHAMPIONSHIP OPPOSION East Leeds proved too good for Student champions Leeds Met as they ground out a 28-16 win. The hosts – who’s attention now turns to Saturday’s opening NCL Premier Division encounter – led 8-0 at half-time and by the close of play were grateful to Jason Priestley who claimed a hat-trick. Jake Normington, Dale Pattinson and Ben Walkin also touched down and goals from Tom Sheldrake and Nathan Conroy completed their scoring. For the students John Dawes was standout with two tries and two goals, whilst Chris Bowler also nipped over. Kells were another home side who triumphed following a 26-12 success over Leigh Miners Rangers. Prop Lewis White led the way and was rewarded with a touchdown, whilst Troy Armstrong and Ross Gainford – who kicked his first two goals – also crossed to make it 16-0. Kieron Eccleston converted a try from Deacon Monks try just before the break to give Miners some hope, and despite second half points via another Eccleston goal and late Tom Farrimond try it was not to be. Tyrone Dalton and Dan Joyce both crossed in the second period as the Cumbrian’s booked their place in the next round. Pilkington Recs cruised to an emphatic 38-0 win over a Myton Warriors side one division higher in the NCL ladder. The Division Two outfit crossed for three tries in the opening eight minutes and that flying start set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Ian Stanley, Mark Briody and Greg Smith were the men to cross the whitewash early, before Liam Bostock added another and Danny Lynch’s fourth goal made it 24-0 at half-time. Lynch darted over for the first points of the second period before the home side closed late efforts from Ste Charlson and John Rees. West Hull came out on top in the battle of the NCL “big guns” thanks to a 28-16 win over Thatto Heath Crusaders. Tom Radley played a leading role for the NCL Champions as he went over for a hat-trick, whilst Josh Hart – who also tagged on two goals – Sam Radford and Luke Foster also got in on the scoring act. Thatto – who had opened the scoring after just three minutes – managed touchdowns from Adam Walsh, Dave Pike and Liam Forsyth. All of which were improved by Shaun Quinn. Hull Dockers powered past Siddal 42-8. The Halifax-based visitors weren’t helped by the sin-binning and eventual dismissal of Scott Caley and could only muster tries to Emmerson Newburn and Richard Lopag. Stand-off Chris Stephenson improved all seven touchdowns from the hosts, with their four-pointers coming from James Beaumont, Craig Render, Craig Skelton, Ryan Esders, Stephenson, Matty Johnson and Jon Eccles. Wigan St Patricks edged a high-scoring encounter at Rochdale Mayfield 36-28. The visitors raced into a 24-0 lead within the opening 12 minutes, but were made to work hard as Mayfield fought back. Phil Mitchell’s late try eventually made the game safe for Premier Division St Pats, with his score adding to earlier efforts from Ryan Smith, Keiran Harrison, James Noon and Tom Atherton. Brad Smith finished with a six-goal haul. Callum Marriott’s late effort was nothing more than Mayfield deserved as Lewis Sheridan’s fourth goal completed the scoring. Earlier Todd O’Brien, Jack Sampson (2) and Sheridan had kept Mayfield in the contest. Division Two Elland gave NCL heavy-weights Wath Brow Hornets a scare before slipping to a narrow 12-6 defeat. A Fran King touchdown after just two minutes got the Cumbrians off to a great start, before the centre added a conversion to Peter Caddy’s effort just before the break. Elland showed their mettle when Gareth Webb crashed over and Cayci Pearson tagged on the extras, however, a late penalty from the boot of King finally settled the home side’s nerves. Egremont Rangers were given a tough workout by Cumbria Men’s League champions Walney Central before coming home 28-16. Their victory on the road came thanks to tries to Reece Davies (2), Ryan Barnes, Richard Farrer and Gary Elliott, whilst Matthew Bewsher and Matty Holden both landed two goals each. A dominant first half display laid the foundations for Normanton Knights 44-10 victory over the RAF. Steve Lewis, Adam Salter, Thomas Carroll and Chris Woolford all scored to open up a 22-0 interval lead. Lee Maskill and Lewis increased the home sides advantage with the opening tries of the second period, before Adrian Mulcahy – who also landed six goals – and Clarke Thompson crossed late on to complete a job well done. Milford Marlins returned from the capital with a place in the round three draw thanks to a 24-6 win against South West London Chargers. Martin Loveridge and Ryan Oxtoby touched down to give the Leeds side an 8-0 half-time lead, and that was increased early in the second period when Elliot Whitehouse improved a Sam Clayton effort which had seen him race 80 metres. Despite a brief rally from the hosts Aaron Jones-Bishop crossed to give the Marlins the initiative again, before another Waterhouses conversion and two late penalties closed matters.
