Field work covers a vast profile of elevations in coniferous forest, aspen, oak, post-burn, meadow, and chaparral habitats, with a focus of collecting data in post-fire habitats. Primary duties include, but are not limited to conducting multiple-species avian point counts, nest searching, vegetation surveys, data entry, navigating cross-country in mountainous terrain and driving government-owned 4×4 vehicles. Compensation is $2800/month for technician positions with work vehicles provided. Housing will be secured for field crews at $300/mo. One technician will be based near Lake Almanor and the second will be based in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Qualifications: All successful candidates must be able to identify over 100 bird species by sight and sound following three weeks of training. All candidates must have the ability and physical fitness to hike and navigate cross-country in complex, steep mountainous terrain in post-fire (brushy, sooty) landscapes. Candidates with previous experience point counting multiple species and/or a strong background in Western bird identification by sight and sound are preferred. We require self-motivation, an enthusiasm for travel and camping, strong physical condition, good sense of direction, the ability to cope with snow and inclement weather, willingness to spend long hours in the field observing birds 6 days/week and the abilities to work well independently and in a group living situation. Most positions require significant driving between remote sites (up to 2-4 hours traveling per day for some positions) and front-country camping up to 5 days/week. Successful applicants will need a valid U.S. driver’s license and will be asked to provide information to verify their good driving record. To Apply: Send a single document (PDF [preferred] or Word Doc) including a cover letter describing previous point count experience and interest in this position, specific dates of availability, geographic location preference (if any), a resume, and contact information for three references to ALISSA FOGG ((EM: afogg AT pointblue.org) and BRENT CAMPOS (EM: bcampos AT pointblue.org).
