SIGN THE PETITION TO Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia Dear Mr Abbott We believe that the endangerment of the orang-utan is a very important issue. We also believe that you are in a position to take action to address this issue. One hundred years ago there were an estimated 315 000 orang-utans in the wild. There are less than 54 000 in Borneo and now only 6000 on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This is because the habitat of the orang-utan is being destroyed for palm oil plantations. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil which is made from palm fruit. Palm oil can be contained in many products, including bread, biscuits, chips, chocolate and even personal care items such as shampoos and moisturisers. However, only half of the packaged products on Australian shelves are labelled to show they contain palm oil. We believe that palm oil products need to be labelled with this information so people can choose not to purchase them. We request that you make it illegal to sell products containing palm oil unless there is a clear label on the front of the product, specifying it contains palm oil. This would put pressure on manufacturers not to include palm oil as an ingredient. As a result, there would be fewer palm oil plantations and this would stop the reduction of the habitat of the orang-utan. Your effectiveness in your role as Prime Minister will be judged on your commitment to environmental issues. You can demonstrate this commitment by making companies label products if they contain palm oil. The eyes of the world are watching! By showing that you care about the damage caused by palm oil plantations you would show Australian voters and the world that you care about preserving orang-utans for our future generation. We hope you will act promptly; it is time that action is taken to help save the orang-utans from extinction.
