SIGNS OF HOPE. HOW MAINE CAN HELP LEAD THE NATION AND LABELING OF GE FOOD. Earlier this Fall MOFGA posted this article which had been published in its periodical, The Maine Organic Farmer and Gardener by editor Jean English. The article reported on the marathon April public hearing on LD 718, Maines GMO Label bill which went on to win nearly unanimous legislative passage: 141-4 in the House and 35-0 in the Senate. Gov. Paul LePage has issued a written promise that he will sign LD 718 into law when the Legislature reconvenes in January. Read this story if you need a reminder of how our system is supposed to work. On April 23, more than 200 people took the time to attend a rally at the Maine State House to confirm that the people want to know what is in their food. Almost 100 signed up to testify in support of LD 718, Maines Right to Know GMO Labeling bill, before the Legislatures Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (ACF). They want the same rights that more than half the world’s people, in 62 other countries, have.
