SIMPLE FORMULA TO GET BAND 9 FOR GRAMMATICAL RANGE CRITERIA IN IELTS WRITING: For a maximum mark in Grammatical Range, you need to demonstrate the ability to write 4 different types of complex sentences: a - compound type, joining with and / but / or; b - nominative (noun) subordinate clause (begins with relative pronouns, eg. who / which, etc. c - Adverbial subordinated clauses or phrases; d - Adjectival subordinated clauses or phrases. An average of 15 to 16 sentences appear in the most essays and the majority of them need to be complex, so this means you need 8 or 9 of them, and ideally, there would be at least 2 of each type. This strategy maximizes your mark for Grammatical Range. Regarding Grammatical Accuracy, if your grammar errors are small and few you can earn an 8.5 for the grammar component. Even with 1 or 2 small errors you can still earn a 9.0.
