SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR (2014) pleased me that it was produced -- I like that so many great actors got to work and that writer-director-producer-editor-composer Robert Rodriguez continues to crank out independent films with his Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas -- but, I wish I didnt have to watch the movie. Im happy that Josh Brolin and Rosario Dawson and Juno Temple and Mickey Rourke all paid off their mortgages with this show, but thats about as kind as I can be, Unlike his heroes John Carpenter or David Cronenberg, whove resorted to bubble gum and rubber bands to make horror thrillers with a maverick sensibility, Rodriguez and his collaborator Frank Miller have no sensibility. Like its predecessor, A DAME TO KILL FOR is all right to walk away from for long periods of time without missing anything particularly intense or troubling. In other words, lukewarm junk. Highlights include Joseph Gordon-Leavitt facing off against Powers Boothe at a poker table, Eva Green vamping it up with no inhibitions whatsoever and even Jessica Alba, who gets more interesting the more exploitation pictures she slums for with Rodriguez.
