SIZE ISNT EVERYTHING - Chris Ogborne I took a guest to the moorland stretch of the River Camel yesterday and right at the outset he said ‘I guess half a pound is a good fish up here?’ He was so right. The little brownies, as wild as the sky, average around six ounces and a fish of half a pound is indeed a good one But size isnt everything. As my guest found when he hooked this fish and it took him all over the pool! I’d guess it was no more than 9 ounces but on ultra light gear it fought better than some sea trout. We released it quickly and it was none the worse for the experience – and probably a bit wiser. For me – and for my guest – it’s the rise, the point of contact with these beautiful wild trout that really matters. Fooling a spring fish with a dry fly, with just a few hawthorns and an occasional early olive on the water and seeing them rise with total confidence. That’s what fishing is all about!
