SInce Ms. Pond gave us her reasons for opposing the bond proposal, Ill give you my reasons for supporting it. 1.) Its really quite tiresome and upsetting to listen to my teacher friends remind me about the joys of teaching in classrooms that dont have heat when its 30 degrees, dont have air conditioning when its 103, and dont have stable roofs (necessitating buckets, trash cans and any other water-catching receptacle) when it rains. These conversations have been happening for years. 2.) I know for a fact that you can access at least six of LISDs nine campuses without anyone in administration knowing youre there. This is not the administrators fault. The campuses are not secure, and this is an issue that should have been addressed years ago. 3.) Fees and fines for our lack of ADA and TEA compliance in our facilities are going to cost us. If we dont remedy the problems, and get out in front of the growth now, were going to have to pay the fees and fines, and make the upgrades anyway. This is not a question of if. Complaints against our facilities have already been made. Its a question of when. 4.) The quality of our childrens education WILL improve, when we can recruit and retain more quality teachers (most of whom are perfectly willing to move to another district to NOT have to deal with the problems addressed in Point 1, above). This is not to say that our teachers arent great... they are. But those of you that are saying focus on getting better teachers, better curriculum... ask yourselves... how? 5.) Career and Technology programs, and Fine Arts are why I am where I am today, in terms of my education and my career. I had many fine academic teachers (in the same buildings that the kids are using today), but I had my true MENTORS in CATE and Fine Arts. The better facilities we have to attract quality teachers to those programs, the better facilities we have to offer for those teachers and those students, the better their chances of finding their niche and succeeding within that niche will be.
