SLAVERY is not a recent phenomenon in man’s dark history. Yet, in the 21st century, one would assume this barbaric practice to be a thing of the past. This is obviously not the case as figures released by the NGO Walk Free Foundation in its Global Slavery Index 2013 show. The survey estimates that around 30 million people are living as slaves worldwide. The WFF’s definition of slavery includes practices such as debt bondage, human trafficking and exploitation of children. While Mauritania reportedly has the highest prevalence of modern slavery, numbers-wise the problem is most acute in South Asia; India is said to have around 12 million people living in slavery while in Pakistan the number is around two million. Even worse, Pakistan’s efforts to address the problem have been described in the report as “token at best and non-existent at worst”.
